About DMV Master
We help US drivers pass their state's written knowledge test on the first try — with free, state-specific practice questions backed by official driver manuals and vehicle codes.
Our mission
Failing your DMV written test is expensive — most states charge a re-test fee, you waste a half-day at the DMV, and you walk out without a permit. We started DMV Master because every existing free practice test we found was either out of date, used questions from one generic state (usually California), or buried real answers behind paywalls.
DMV Master is different on three counts: state-specific content (each of the 50 US states has its own dedicated practice library), real explanations with law citations (so you understand why the answer is right, not just that it is), and completely free (no signup, no paywall, no email gate to view answers).
What we publish
- 1,100+ practice questions covering every topic on US written knowledge tests — signs, rules of the road, right-of-way, defensive driving, parking, sharing the road.
- 50 state-specific test pages with the actual question count, passing score, time limit, and unique state laws (e.g., California's Move-Over Law, Texas's school zone speed, New York's NYS&T rules).
- 50 license guide pages covering permit/license eligibility ages, fees, supervised driving hours, written test details, and the one rule per state most applicants miss.
- 50 printable cheat sheets — one-page condensed study guides you can save as PDF or print.
- 50 US road sign reference pages with images, MUTCD codes, meanings, and what-to-do guidance.
- 700+ motorcycle practice questions plus a dedicated Class M section for motorcycle endorsement applicants.
The DMV Master app
This website is the free, public-facing companion to the DMV Master iOS app, which adds full timed mock exams matching each state's official passing score, a smart review mode that shows you the questions you keep getting wrong, and offline study so you can practice without a connection. The app is free to download with optional Pro features.
Editorial team
All content is reviewed by the DMV Master Editorial Team — a group of writers and editors who specialize in transportation regulation. Every question is cross-checked against the relevant state driver's manual, and every state-specific law citation traces back to an actual statute (vehicle code, transportation code, or motor vehicle code, depending on the state).
Read our editorial policy for details on how we research, fact-check, and update content. See our methodology for how questions are sourced and verified.
Trust & transparency
DMV Master is an independent study resource. We are not affiliated with any state Department of Motor Vehicles, the federal Department of Transportation, or any government agency. We do not sell your data, do not require an account to access content, and do not place anything between you and the answer to a practice question.
If you spot a question, explanation, or rule citation that's wrong or out of date, please tell us. We update content within 48 hours of receiving a verified correction.
