What does the No Stopping Sign mean?

The No Stopping sign prohibits all stopping at the marked location, including for passenger pickup or drop-off. Vehicles may not halt at the curb except in a true emergency. This is the strictest of the parking-related restrictions.

What to do when you see this sign

  1. 1

Do not stop your vehicle at this location for any non-emergency reason

  2. 2

Continue past the sign even if dropping off or picking up someone

  3. 3

Find an alternate, legal location to stop nearby

  4. 4

Stopping due to traffic conditions (red lights, congestion) is permitted

Test trap: don't get caught by this

No Stopping is the strictest — even briefly halting to drop off a passenger is illegal. Compare to No Parking (brief stops OK) and No Standing (very brief halts allowed for active loading).

Frequently asked questions

Can I stop in a No Stopping zone if my car has mechanical trouble?
Yes, in a genuine emergency. You should pull as far off the road as possible, turn on hazard lights, and call for assistance immediately.
Is stopping at a red light allowed in a No Stopping zone?
Yes. The sign refers to elective stops, not stops required by traffic control. You must obey signals as normal.
Why are these signs more strict than No Parking signs?
No Stopping zones are typically in critical traffic areas (highway shoulders, tunnels, fire lanes) where any stopped vehicle creates serious safety or operational hazards.
